i'm using ht503 ata but the auto-provisioning should be the same. u need the
ff:
1. GS configuration tool
2. configuration template
3. TFTP/HTTP server

general steps:
1. get a copy of the raw config text file and modify the settings
2. run the GS java program to create the cfgxxxxxxxxxxxx where the
xxxxxxxxxxxx is the MAC address of the IP phone
3. place this file on the TFTP/HTTP server
4. set the IP address of the configuration server in the IP phone via keypad
5. reboot it

hope it helps.

Hello Nandy,

this is exactly what i did i mean .. quite close...

i configured the DHCP server to pass the address of the http server to the
phone via DHCP Option 43 (vendor-specific) by tunneling option 66 within
option 43. With wireshark, i can see the phone gets the config file from the
specified server/path but for some reason it doesn't applay it.

do i need to configure something special on that template ? I've changed sip
server/accounts settings and some other things but it doesn't seem to be
working.

I got the template from
http://www.grandstream.com/support/configurationtool.html

do i need to encode it in a certan way before putting it to a http server?

I won't answer to your question but I'll told you about my experience with
grandstream: I've got 2 HT488 that were stopped for 2 years; recently I
re-plugged them and wanted to upgrade to the latest firmware.
PB: not any HT488 firmware in any places at gs, a bunch of people that have
the same PB on forums, and not even a word of answer from gs (sales,
tech, ...)

So, it tells me one thing: these guys are BOH that only want to take your
money and don't care once its done.

You can oppose this behaviour to Linksys: even if you have to dig a bit,
you're still able to recover stable or beta firmware for old appliances that
works correctly

A quick Google took me here:
http://www.grandstream.com/BETATEST/HT488_496_386/

On the other hand, trying to get proper information as to how to
securely remotely provision Linksys phones is a task for Hercules;
Grandstream just make the tools available to all.

Quite amazing: I can ensure you that before the beginning of february 2010,
not any info was available from them (I spent a whole week seeking and
trying to ask gs people - still no answer.)
And my Linksys example was just to make a parallel in service matter.

But I'm not stubborn: I can reconsider (AFA this firmware is working
correctly, which wasn't the case for a bunch of them.)

At this time, the least critics I heard about IP phones was about SNOM
(if some people could confirm that, it would be good:)

Last had the pleasure of using one maybe two or three years ago - its
number auto-completion feature drove me nuts (dial 2002 to call someone
internally and, if you'd previously dialled 02072002123, it'd dial that
instead); I've no doubt you can turn it off, but I just returned to my
simple Grandstream.

I see that this kind of appliance's the same as others: m$ malpractices,
such as taking users for alpha-testers, has spread a lot :(

do u mean, you just placed the edited configuration (text file) on the http
server? no, you need to install the Configuration Tool program. the program
needs the ff parameters:
1. MAC address
2. template text file

it should produce a binary cfgxxxxxxxxxxxx file. this is the one u must
place in your server.

btw, i'm not familiar w/ DHCP Option 43. so, i use the keypad to point the
IP phone to the config server. :-)
